According to Peter Chudy, the Polish pharmaceutical market is far more advanced now as compared with the beginning of the post-communist transformation period. It is attracting many Polish and foreign investors from the West, CEE and from the Middle East. Chudy gives an example of the recent privatization of Polfa, which attracted seven potential bidders. The Polish drug registering system remains the market's weakness as the registration process is very lengthy, the amount of papers to be filled in is enormous and the regulatory offices respond with delays. Chudy also expresses his view on generic drug producers. In his opinion the large pharmaceutical market players will compete very strongly with the generic drug makers, using patents and emphasizing that their drugs are more expensive because they invest in research, which, as a result, is more beneficial for the customers.
Chudy sees further consolidations in the pharmaceutical sector, one of which may result in an emergence of a major regional player. He also adds that the most efficient Polish companies as well as large foreign enterprises that have already entered the market will remain active.
